Pulmonary Hypoplasia with Anasarca (PHA) is a lethal genetic condition caused by a recessive mutation. PHA-affected calves are born dead with underdeveloped lungs (Pulmonary Hypoplasia) and swelling caused by excessive fluid retention (Anasarca).
Pfizer Animal Genetics is now offering a diagnostic test for the genetic condition PHA.* The gene mutation responsible for PHA has been identified and a diagnostic test has been developed by Dr. Jon Beever at the University of Illinois. Pfizer Animal Genetics has licensed the test and Dr. Beever has validated its results.
Testing for PHA
Testing of suspect animals is essential to avoid the negative impact of PHA and propagation of the recessive gene.
Samples for testing may be submitted in one of the following forms:
- Hair follicles. When sending hair samples, please make sure at least 25 follicles (bulb intact) are included to ensure an adequate volume of DNA to complete the test.
- Blood FTA® cards.
- Semen samples.
- Whole blood samples in purple-topped tubes.
*Please see order form for details on combined genetic conditions testing offers for Pulmonary Hypoplasia with Anasarca and Tibial Hemimelia.
